Montessori Education Philosophy

Montessori PageimageThis unique educational experience was developed over ninety years ago by Dr. Maria Montessori and is now used and celebrated worldwide. Dr. Maria Montessori was an Italian doctor, turned educator. Her aim was to develop a system that ignited a child's innate desire to learn, while recognizing that every child is a unique individual with innate talents and abilities upon which to build.
The Montessori approach to teaching children respects the intelligence and individuality of each child and allows the freedom to explore and express him or herself in a nurturing, prepared environment. With this approach the child who is given the freedom to explore in their own way, at their own pace, and who is supported and challenged in the process, not only learns about the world but will also develop a strong sense of confidence and independence. A Montessori education is described "as an aid to life, as a means of supporting a continual unfolding of each child's personality."
At Four Seasons Montessori, your child will be invited to become an active explorer in the classroom. The environment is deliberately and beautifully planned to provide each child with exciting learning opportunities that are designed for success and growth. Activities are freely chosen. Children are taught to respect the materials and thus develop a sense of responsibility for the classroom and their own education. The role of the Montessori Directress is to prepare and guide these experiences. The ultimate goal of the Directress is to intervene less and less as the child develops. The Directress will create an atmosphere of calm, order and joy in the classroom and is there to encourage the children in all their efforts, which in turn develops self confidence and inner discipline.

As Dr. Montessori expressed, “we are helping the child to help themselves."
